چکیده

A study has been made of various methods of distillation of solutions of furfural and of xylose with the object of increasing the 88-percent yield of furfural obtained from xylose by the present standard m ethod of distillation. Sources of error that have been considered are: Decomposition of furfural, volatilization of furfural, effect of rubber stoppers used in the distillation procedure, incompleteness of distillation, furfural formed from hexuronic acid, and substances other than furfural or methylfurfural in the distillate. A procedure has been developed which prevents superheating of the solution but which gives rapid formation and removal of the furfural. The apparatus has only glass in contact with the hot vapors and acid, and is closed with a trap to prevent evaporation from the distillate. The procedure employs 12-percent hydrochloric acid saturated with sodium chloride to accelerate the formation of furfural , which is then removed by stearn distillation. This prevents decomposition of the furfural and gives a practically theoretical yield of furfural from xylose. CONTENTS Page

Microwave-Assisted Green Production of Furfural from D-xylose of Sugarcane Bagasse

D-xylose is a component of sugarcane bagasse that can be used as a renewable resource for the production of a variety of chemicals. By means of catalytic reactions in an aqueous medium, it was determined that D-xylose can efficiently be converted into furfural by the application of microwave as a green synthetic methodology. The highest yields of furfural were obtained at a HCl concentration of...

SO42−/Sn-MMT Solid Acid Catalyst for Xylose and Xylan Conversion into Furfural in the Biphasic System

A sulphated tin ion-exchanged montmorillonite (SO4/Sn-MMT) was successfully prepared by the ion exchange method of montmorillonite (MMT) with SnCl4, followed by the sulphation. This catalysis was applied as a solid acid catalyst for the heterogeneous catalytic transformations of xylose and xylan into furfural in the bio-based 2-methyltetrahydrofuran/H2O biphasic system. These prepared catalysts...

Green Chemistry CRITICAL REVIEW

In this paper both the mechanistic and kinetic aspects of furfural formation from pentoses in aqueous acidic media have been reviewed. Based on the reviewed literature, a comprehensive reaction mechanism has been proposed consisting of more than one route, all starting from acyclic xylose, and involving alternately 1,2-enolization, β-elimination or isomerization via 1,2-hydride shift as key ste...

Functional relationship of furfural yields and the hemicellulose-derived sugars in the hydrolysates from corncob by microwave-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment

BACKGROUND Corncob as one of the most suitable feedstock for the production of a variety of high-value-added chemicals is receiving increasing attention worldwide because of the characteristics of high carbohydrate (cellulose and hemicelluloses) contents and high energy densities. Furfural produced from hemicelluloses is a highly versatile and key feedstock used in the manufacture of a wide ran...

Selective Preparation of Furfural from Xylose over Sulfonic Acid Functionalized Mesoporous Sba-15 Materials

Sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 materials were prepared using the co-condensation and grafting methods, respectively, and their catalytic performance in the dehydration of xylose to furfural was examined. SBA-15-SO3H(C) prepared by the co-condensation method showed 92–95% xylose conversion and 74% furfural selectivity, and 68–70% furfural yield under the given reaction conditions...
